Rak Chazak! Saturday, February 2, 2013

Saturday, February 2, 2013

Indoors. Inside Harvest, Young Adults room.

Come join us for Rak Chazak! disciplining the mind and body for the glory of God!

We are continuing our series on 1 Timothy in 1:15-17:

"The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever.Amen."

Our new name: Rak Chazak!

Rak Chazak Amatz! An ancient Hebrew war cry used to stir soldiers for battle. When Israel soldiers heard "Rak Chazak Amatz!" ("be strong and courageous"), they would ready themselves to rush headlong into battle. A surging rush of blood. An intense fervour. Permeating their mind, body, heart and spirit.

Think about Aragon's speech in the final battle scene from the Return of the King (Lord of the Rings). Soldiers of Gondor, Rohan, and their allies. Mere men standing before the gates of Mordor, prepared to fight against the Dark Lord Sauron and his army. The chances of victory in this battle are nil. Any hope lies with two hobbits and a creature named Gollum.

Listen (and watch!) Aragorn's battle speech, as he stirs up his men for battle.

He could have very well added, "Rak Chazak! Soliders of Gondor and Rohan! Men of the West! Rak Chazak Amatz!"

This war cry, Rak Chazak!, is the new name of our ministry. Be strong. We don't want to just be physically strong, but spiritually strong too. Nevertheless, we discipline our bodies in physical training as well to bring it under the control of Christ, so that every part of us can be used for His glory.

"For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places."
--Ephesians 6:12

"But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others, I myself should be disqualified."
--1 Corinthians 9:27

We are continuing our series on 1 Timothy in 1:12-14:

"I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service, though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus"

Devotion

1 Timothy 1:3-11

As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.

Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.
